People have come together across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others taken back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again create a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state commemorations until 16 October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred around the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas assault was held in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was held around the country.

Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas representatives met in the North African Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to review the provisions of the plan.

A prominent Palestinian official familiar with the talks revealed that an night meeting of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the morning session finished without tangible results, amid differences over the proposed Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not restart combat after the opening period of the arrangement.

He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have still not produce any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to narrow the differences between the both parties.

Key Issues in Talks

  • A lasting truce
  • The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance provision
  • After-conflict governance of the territory

Citizen Feeling

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were lost their lives and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place feels like home now and until every captive come back none of us will be secure."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can commence recover," she continued.

In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.

Protester Atalia Regev remarked: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the hostages to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Research now consistently show that around seventy percent of Israelis prefer the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, mourners assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the morning of that day in the western district, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"When the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, especially my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we monitor the updates to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had accepted the bodies of several people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated another two dead people had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli troops while attempting to get help to the south, health workers said.
