The ice cream brand's Co-Founder States Parent Company Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed how he will independently develop the controversial product as part of a personal series showcasing issues the company was prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest development deepens the ongoing tension among the internationally recognized dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant that acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.
The co-founders maintain that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Sorbet as an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via an Instagram video how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, asking for public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become a symbol of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments
Several years ago, the ice cream company ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Intentions
The founder revealed that he plans to create additional ice cream flavors that address issues that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
The announcement comes after partner Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company recently, following many years with the organization, citing worries that its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence so that it can achieve the social mission, the values that it was founded on while upholding for over 40 years," he explained to journalists.
