The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident
At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, authorities have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named at this time.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father of five children, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.
Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She described the moments before the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
In a statement, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
