Reports emerged of numerous blasts and the noise of low-flying aircraft in the Venezuelan capital in the early hours of the weekend. This incident has sparked claims from Venezuela's government and demands for global scrutiny.

Caracas Accuses Washington of Aggression

The incumbent administration has accused the United States of committing "imperialist aggression," alleging that ex- President Trump allegedly authorized military strikes against the Latin American country. In an public declaration, the authorities confirmed that strikes had targeted Caracas and three other provinces: Miranda, La Guaira, and Aragua.

"Our sole aim of this attack is to seize control of Venezuela's natural resources, in particular its crude oil and mineral wealth," the government said.

The government called on the global community to condemn the operations, which it termed a "clear infringement of global law" that placed countless of lives in jeopardy.

Accounts of Blasts and Defense Bases Targeted

Residents reported hearing roughly seven powerful blasts around the middle of the night local time. Residents in various districts allegedly rushed into the streets outside.

"The whole ground shook. It was frightening. We heard blasts and jets in the sky," commented one local.

Smoke was reported pouring from two military installations in the city: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna compound, where president Maduro is reported to have a residence.

International Condemnation

The president of neighboring Colombia, wrote on social media that "Currently they are attacking Venezuela... attacking it with projectiles." He requested an swift emergency session of the United Nations Security Council.

The Colombian government, which just joined the UNSC, said it would activate security measures at its shared border with its neighbor.

Preceding Events

The alleged attacks are preceded by a prolonged military buildup by the US against the Maduro government. Since last summer, there has been a substantial American military buildup off Venezuela's Caribbean coast and a series of airstrikes on boats accused of illegal activities.

The administration has stated "the implementation of external threat" and ordered all national defence measures to be activated. It has also urged its supporters to protest and "denounce this foreign act."

American officials and the Defense Department have not immediately responded to inquiries for comment regarding the reports.
